Mountaineering villages
Mountain villages meet the goals of the Alpine Convention in a special way, which strives for sustainable development in the entire Alpine area.
Mountaineering villages (Bergsteigerdörfer©) is a network that unites places or municipalities in the Alps with a focus on sustainable mountain tourism and represent great potential in tradition, culture and originality. The villages provide a high-quality offer for mountaineers and hikers, a varied landscape and are committed to preserving local heritage and natural values. The members of the network put into practice sustainable development and the goals and protocols of the Alpine Convention, including tourism based on experiencing and observing nature, with an emphasis on hiking and activities that do not require a large tourist infrastructure, mountain farming and forestry with local products, protection of nature and landscape, sustainable mobility, preserved and alive character of mountain villages.
Mountaineering villages is a network of a project led by the Austrian Mountaineering Association (ÖAV) since 2008 with the support of the Austrian Ministry of Environment and the Permanent Secretariat of the Alpine Convention. The purpose of ÖAV is to use this network and the brand to help small villages or communities in the Alps for sustainable mountain tourism. Since 2016, ÖAV has extended the network to other neighboring Alpine countries. Today, it is an international project, the bearer of which is the ÖAV, and the members of the Mountain Association of South Tyrol (AVS), Germany (DAV), Italy (CAI) and Slovenia (PZS). The Mountaineering villages network includes 20 municipalities from Austria, three from Germany and one from South Tyrol. In 2018, one more municipality from Germany, one from South Tyrol, one from Italy and Jezersko joins the network, as the first mountain village from Slovenia.
The national mountaineering association is responsible for the implementation of the project at the national level, in Slovenia it is the Alpine Association of Slovenia (PZS). PZS is also a member of the international board of the Mountaineering villages network.
The local community of Dovje - Mojstrana has been a member of the association of Mountaineering villages since 2023.
