Under the steep and shady rock face of Pokljuka, after its re-emergence, the Radovna River has gained enough power to be able to drive a waterwheel for a millstone and a water- wheel for a Venetian sawmill.
As water was scarce, the mill and sawmill only operate occasionally – at high water. This was usually in May and June, when the snow on the mountain slopes melted, and also in September and October, during the autumn rainy season. It is not known when the mill and sawmill were first built, but they continued to operate until the 1970s. In 1997, the Psnak farm owner and master restored the mill and sawmill in order to be able to show visitors the way things used to be done. The mill and sawmill are proof of man’s formerly refined and imaginative adaptation to the natural environment, benefiting man while preserving all the beauty of nature. The black- stone used for grinding grains can still be seen in the mill. The wooden Venetian sawmill was operated at the same time as the mill for the sake of efficiency, and was connected to the mechanism by a driven waterwheel.
