Škrlatica (2.740 m)

Škrlatica is the second highest mountain in Slovenia.

Škrlatica is the second highest mountain in Slovenia. A cross stands at the top, which makes it easy to identify the peak from the neighbouring mountains. It also has a very distinctive north-northwestern face, which is clearly visible from the Vršič road. From the top there is a beautiful view of all the peaks above the Vrata valley, especially Triglav and the neighbouring Dolkova špica. At the top, the feeling is similar to standing on top of one of the peaks of the Dolomites. It’s no wonder it’s even a bit harder to reach than Triglav.

From the car park, continue along the macadam road, which after a 3-minute walk brings you to the crossroads at the Aljažev dom lodge. Continue right in the direction of Škrlatica and Dolkova špica along the path that leads across the meadow into the forest. You will soon reach the bed of a torrent and continue along it for a short distance before turning right and climbing steeply through the forest. Continue climbing up the slopes which are slightly overgrown with pine and individual larch trees. Continue on the ascending path to the right in the direction of Škrlatica (to the left: bivouac, 2 minutes, and Križ, 1 h 30 min). Cross a small scree slope and then turn sharp right. Continue on a slightly exposed slope (slip hazard), after which you will reach the pastures below Dolkova špica. In early summer, you may also come across a snowfield here (be careful). The trail then starts to ascend again and soon reaches Zadnji Dolek, located between Škrlatica and Dolkova špica. You will reach a crossroads where you continue to the right towards Škrlatica. Continue your ascent up the scree until you reach the entrance to the wall. The trail continues along the western face and is well secured in the initial part with pegs and steel ropes.

When you get to the top of the indent, descend a little and you will reach what is probably the most challenging part of the trail. The trail is very well secured in this part with a safety rail and clamps. Here you can also see the Škrlatica window, which is overlooked by many mountaineers. The path becomes slightly less challenging and leads to a ridge, where beautiful views open up to the east, with great vistas of the nearby Rokavi. From here it’s about half an hour’s walk to the top. You will soon see the cross and then it is just a short climb to a very scenic peak.
